This course will give a unique perspective as well as practical suggestions on how to accomplish couples’ therapy. There will be no more than 10 participants and will include didactic presentations, a live interview with a couple, video presentation and, because of the small group size, there will be plenty of time to answer individual questions throughout the day. The workshop will address general issues couples bring to sessions as well as specific issues such as affairs, violence and addiction. This workshop is ideal for undergraduate, graduate and doctorate level clinicians, social workers, psychologists, mental health counselors, and nurse practitioners.

Objectives:
- Learn practical interventions to help therapists help couples with conflict, affairs, alcohol and drug use/abuse/addiction, violence, pending separation, raising families, finances and other issues.
- Learn how to identify what is getting in the way of couples’ well-being.
- Learn a unique perspective on viewing couples that will act as a guide for interventions.
- Acquire new understanding, knowledge, behaviors and skills to work with couples.

Instructor: Larry Shushansky, LICSW

With more forty-five years of experience starting at a Rape Crisis Center as an undergraduate student, and finishing his graduate studies in 1980, Larry has worked for profit and nonprofit organizations before starting a private practice in 1988. Early on in his career he was involved in postgraduate studies at The Cambridge Family Institute and devoted the first eight years of his career directing a residential facility for adolescents, working in emergency services, in hospital settings, family service agencies, the court system and mental health centers. Additionally, Larry has presented workshops for community organizations, businesses, colleges/universities, inpatient and outpatient settings, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers and more. He has written articles and been cited in numerous articles in publications like Redbook, The Chicago Times, The Boston Globe, the Huffington Post and is a contributor to the NAMI blog. Additionally, he had written his own weekly blog for three years, after publishing his first book, Independent Enough. Now, after helping hundreds of clients create the kinds of relationships they want, raising three children and being married for forty-one years, he wants to bring his concepts out from behind closed doors and introduce them to a wider audience.
